Say “meditation” to someone and the first words that pop into their heads might be “mystical.”
True, there’s a bit of the sacred at work in meditation—but that’s because it’s been around for thousands of years.
The first practitioners used it to try and connect on a deeper level to themselves and to shared consciousness. Today’s practitioners, however, might find some more practical but equally useful benefits.
For starters, giving the mind some focus also gives lots of things a chance to work inside the mind and body. Those include stress (less of it), pain (diminished, especially the chronic kind), and depression (again, lessened).
That’s led more and more people to find a comfortable spot, pick a mantra and something to focus on, and give themselves over—even for a few minutes a day—to a more restful, zen place.
Why Meditate?
In a world filled with distressing news, combined with lifestyles that encompass a lot of stress, anxiety, and worry – quieting your mind is a wise thing to do.
It isn’t about trying to avoid our problems. Nothing good comes from turning our backs to ourselves – or life in general.
Meditating is a useful tool in helping you to gain insight that may not be available to you using intellect only. It’s about allowing yourself to connect to a higher place – a sense of wisdom that can only occur when we quite ourselves down from the constant chatter that takes place within our minds.
Now when it comes to meditation, there are several different methods that will work for different people. The idea is to experiment and discover which type of meditation suits YOU best.
What can meditation do for you and how can you give it a try?
