My 4th book, “Don’t Be a Jackass: Observe Others, Own Yourself and Wise the F*ck Up” is published.
This is exciting for me! Not just because I’ve written a new book, but because I started this project as something of a joke over a year and a half ago.
One evening, back in mid-late 2016, I somehow came up with the idea of writing a book about not being an asshole. The concept intrigued me and I wrote the preface, intro and a couple of chapters. I then put the project away, realizing I wasn’t committed to it and didn’t really think about it again for a while.
Instead, I wrote “Streetwise Philosophy” and “Choose Awareness”. While I enjoyed putting those two books together, I figured I was done with the whole book writing thing. It’s a daunting task and while I know there are those who talk about writing a book in a weekend (or even just a day), as far as I’m concerned, it takes a lot of work and planning.
In addition to that, I can’t force content. I write when I’m inspired. It’s ONLY when the words are about to spill out of me that I can create a piece of work that’ll make me proud. Everything I write comes straight from my heart, my truth and my sense of awareness. My ability to connect with something deep inside of me to share a message that I feel has the possibility to truly open and transform my reader’s perspective on life, themselves and reality as we know it is the most important work I’ll ever do.
It’s why I’m here.
So the fact that I have not only picked this project back up, but completed it means I have something to share with you…and now that the thoughts and ideas that found their way into my mind, now going on two years ago has become a real physical manifestation into something tangible that I can share with you, I’m stoked to tell you about it – and of course, where to find it.
Don’t Be a Jackass: Observe Others, Own Yourself and Wise the F*ck Up
Don’t Be a Jackass is a lighthearted book with a serious message. It’s about personal responsibility, self-awareness and wising up.
We live in a world where we focus so much of our attention on everything outside of us – and while our surroundings certainly paint a picture of “what is”, it seems to me that what is has more to do with what’s inside of us than anything else.
How people treat you, the choices you make and the way your life unfolds is a direct result of who you are inside. Your thoughts, beliefs and subsequent actions all stem from perspective – and until that is faced and changed, if necessary, then fixing what’s on the outside, while helpful in many ways, contains limitations.
In this book, I’m not discussing how to become successful or how to “win in life.” This book isn’t a pep talk telling you “You can do it!”
Instead, my precious jackass book invites you to look within and ask yourself things like:
- Why do I continue to let people take advantage of me?
- Why do I still work for someone who treats me like shit?
- What are the sponsoring thoughts and beliefs behind my actions?
- Who am I and why am I like this?
It’s easy to blame others for our problems. And sometimes, they really are at fault. But how will you know when someone else needs to take responsibility for themselves when you aren’t clear on what belongs to YOU?
When you observe others, you still see yourself. Your feelings about those around you tell you what’s inside of you.
When you own yourself, you go within and dig deep to see what makes you who you are – who you’ve been and who you’d prefer to be.
Wising the fuck up means you take this information and use it intelligently. You organize this valuable insight and therefore, are in a position to respond to life and others in a way that encompasses dignity, intelligence, integrity and maturity.
In a world where we see so many adults acting like spoiled brats, wising up means a lot. But it’s difficult work, it’s time consuming and takes a lot of courage.
This book, underneath it all, is about care. Caring about the world we live in and what we contribute to it.
Caring about ourselves from a holistic place and becoming someone who emanates wisdom and virtue.
And living our truth.
So What’s Inside the Book?
Don’t Be a Jackass talks about:
- What makes someone a jackass
- Observing others and owning yourself
- Wising the f*ck up
- Doing no harm (but taking no shit)
- Facing your shadows
I happen to LOVE the chapters about “doing no harm (but taking no shit) and facing your shadows. The former was inspired by my appreciation and practice of Martial Arts – the latter being a product of my own self-awareness work, along with my fondness of Carl Jung’s and Debbie Ford’s work on the human shadow.
The book (if you can’t tell by the title) contains profanity. Some might find that unnecessary, and that’s OK. It really wasn’t necessary, but since it’s written in my natural/conversational tone – as though you and I were speaking freely to one another – it just came out that way. Don’t let the language deter you from reading the book. It won’t interfere with what you’ll get out of reading it.
I’ll leave the link to the Amazon product age below and encourage you to check it out. The “Look Inside” feature should be up shortly, but in the meantime, I’ll leave you with an excerpt from Chapter 4 – Do NO Harm (but take NO shit).
Do NO Harm.
What would life look like if everyone followed this principle? I say society would probably be filled with more compassionate, thoughtful, and conscious people who turned their attention inward and made damn sure to express virtue and benevolence in the world. To me, that seems like heaven on Earth, but I’m well aware that this isn’t the reality.
In truth, society is filled with deeply wounded, angry, vengeful, and downright stupid people. I know that sounds harsh, but I imagine you’ve probably felt the same way.
On the flipside, there are a lot of amazing folks out there who embody kindness, integrity, and grace. Unfortunately, the destructive types mentioned above are out there in force to balance the scales—and that is where the rest of humanity tends to stumble in confusion.
What happens when you walk around with a ‘do no harm’ attitude, but cross paths with some jackass who doesn’t see things the same way?
Take NO shit.
