You might be wondering why it would be a good idea to make it easy for people to find you on social media. But the thing is, I’m not referring to you personally. I’m talking about your work.
As far as I’m concerned, for personal reasons, it’s a great idea to keep your settings as private as possible and to carefully guard your connections and “friends” not only on social media, but in life in general. I truly wish I felt differently about that, but given the world we live in, I do think there’s merit in guarding your personal information.
However, when it comes to your work, well, things are different. I would imagine that if you have a blog, website or business of any kind, local or otherwise, and you use the web to market your business (who doesn’t these days?), you probably want prospective clients & buyers to be able to find you without too much of a hassle.
That being said, while this may sound ironic coming from someone who doesn’t much care for social media (that would be me), I’ve noticed something interesting while I’m perusing some of these websites.People make it pretty tough to find their social media handles on their websites. #socialmediamarketingClick To Tweet
So what gives? And why is it so important to take the guesswork out of your visitor’s hands if they want to follow you? I’ll share a few thoughts on that.
Help Me Find You On Social Media
1 – It seems everyone is vying for visitors
I think it’s safe to say that we all see our social media feeds filled with both personal stories and relevant links to our work. We also do whatever we can to help our network out by sharing their posts to our followers as well.
But considering how many people are posting several times a day, sharing their thoughts about life, some new product they’re offering or whatever, as time goes on, it’s become even more challenging to stand out and be heard.
So while you may hope your posts reach others, those of us visiting your website want to help out by sharing your content, introducing ourselves and yep, following you!
But how can someone like me do this if I can’t find you?I say, if I think you/your work is too wonderful not to share, then make it easy on me and let me not only find you, but include your Twitter handle in your post share. #socialmediamarketingClick To Tweet
You’ll know I care, I’ll know you know (since you’ve probably been notified about it) and we’ll become pals that support one another’s ventures.
2 – Reaching you creates a meaningful connection
I’ve been in the blogging community for many years now (since 2012). And although I don’t post nearly as often as I used to, I’m still involved and connected to some beautiful people. It’s a pleasure for me to share their awesome content and as time goes on, I find it pleasant to make new connections and see where that goes.
So I may visit some sites here and there, tweet their posts and notice that I can’t find their Twitter handles anywhere on their websites. Even more confusing is that I often don’t see their Twitter handles in the tweet itself, which is unfortunate since they’ll probably never know that I thought their content was superb enough to shout it to the world since they won’t be notified about that.
Help me find you!
3 – Think about adding your social media handles to various areas of your site
I know no one wants a chaotic & disorganized looking site. Neither do I.
But there’s no harm in carefully placing your social media buttons in a few different places. I think it can be done while still looking classy and as though it belongs.
For example, mine are in a couple of places on I AM My Imagination. Check out this video for a quick scroll through.
You’ll easily find my social media buttons by the footer area (especially since my homepage doesn’t have a sidebar)…
And you’ll find them on the sidebar on the post & pages sections.
So while I have no desire to scream at anyone to follow me, I do want to make it easy for my precious visitors to do so, if they choose, without having to dig for that information on their own.
Which they won’t!
Social Media Marketing
If you happen to do any social media marketing for clients or you wish to hire someone to help you with yours, it’ll not only save time for everyone involved to have your social media handles out in the open for everyone to see, but it’ll also make it so much easier for visitors to follow you once they’ve devoured your epic content – hungry for more.
So the bottom line here is this:
Make it easy for me, for others – for the world to find your work on social media. Let your handles be easy to locate in any of the popular territories on your site.People are so crunched for time these days. They'll only spend a dollop of their day consuming your content in and of itself, never mind trying to locate you to connect with you. #socialmediamanagementClick To Tweet
And as far as who gets the credit for having my social media handles so easily accessible in this site…
That goes to my fabulous friend, Cori from Corinaramos.net. She’s a wonderful web designer who I can’t recommend highly enough.
I hope this post finds you well, happy and thriving in 2020.
Until next time, take care 🙂
