Whether you’re looking for a side gig or a career change, these days, it’s so important to have an online business.
I’m sure I don’t have to tell you that, nowadays, everywhere you look, you see people confined to their homes. In some cases, it’s happening to entire countries – all thanks to the Coronavirus.
I have no intention of harping on this virus or any other. Personally, I’m choosing to remain observant and responsible, but I’m not going to live in fear.
Instead, I will continue to create useful content that, I hope, inspires you to venture out on your own and create an online business for yourself – whether you go at it full time or, if nothing else, at least start building your foundation.
Why You Need An Online Business (In 2020)
Regardless of whether this specific situation blows over or if/when something else pops up, I’m sure you don’t want to feel trapped by your finances. Maybe this has affected whether you can go to work (or even want to go to work). Perhaps you need to think about working from home and your employer won’t let you. Or, you could simply hate your job and you’re ready to make a change so you can finally start living your truth and enjoying your work.
That’s what I AM My Imagination has become all about over the last year. Creating passive income doing work you love.
Having an online business allows you to work on your terms. Even if you exchange time for money – engaging in a more active form of income, you can still do this online from the comfort of your home, your vacation, or, these days, your staycation.
If you happen to be someone who, whether by choice or through mandatory conditions, needs to stay at home for the time being, I say, use this time to think about what type of work makes you feel alive and see what, if anything, you can do to achieve this as a home-based business.
I have a few ideas I’d like to share with you here. I won’t promise you immediate success or prosperity, but I can safely say that if you free your mind, live your truth and be creative, you’ll feel more empowered and motivated to keep going through the obstacles and challenges that occur when you embark on a new journey. Especially one that rewards you handsomely.
So with that being said, here are some ideas you could look into for creating an online business.
Online Business Models You Can Start Today
For some of these, you might need to develop some skills. The good news is you don’t have to be experienced and you could easily learn new skills from the comfort of your home.
Online courses don’t have to be expensive either. In fact, these days, they’re quite reasonable.
If you have any skills, you can sell them online. These would include things like:
- writing (this could include ghostwriting books & articles. blogging, social media taglines, product descriptions, etc)
- logo design
- making & selling videos
- creating courses
- product review videos/articles
- video tutorials
- creating designs for printables/t-shirts and other merch
Here’s a perfect example of what I’m talking about.
Last year, I went ahead and purchased Doodly whiteboard animation/explainer video software. I wanted to start making videos, but I preferred to stay off-camera.
Using this type of video creation program just spoke to me. These videos can be a lot of fun to watch and they grab people’s attention. I knew it was time for me to expand on my own skillset, plus, I wanted to start producing content – other than writing.
However…I had no idea what I was doing when I first started using this program, but I taught myself how to use it and now I teach others what I've learned. It's helped me to grow my YouTube channel. #videotutorials #homebasedbusiness #careerchangeClick To Tweet
In fact, maybe a month or two after playing with Doodly, I learned how to do something that I knew other people struggled with. I created a short video teaching people how to achieve this specific desired result and it now has almost 4,000 views (and growing)!
Now the funny thing is that I’d originally purchased this program to make my “Nuggets of Wisdom” videos. I did several of these and I still love them and plan to do more – but only for fun. My initial intent, however, turned into something else – which is teaching.
Create Online Courses
I hadn’t really given much thought to teaching before because the idea made me nervous – thinking I didn’t have what it takes. Turns out I was wrong.
In fact, I’ve gotten such positive feedback on my teaching videos that I expanded into creating online courses on Udemy and Skillshare. Between the two platforms, I’ve created a nice stream of passive income that seems to grow each month.
I became a student on both of these online learning platforms before becoming an instructor. I enjoy being a student and I love learning new skills from home. You can easily do the same and become a course creator regardless of your lack of experience or starting point. Just learn the basics, teach your truth and have a strong desire to help others.I'm teaching others the skills I wanted to learn through online courses, but couldn't find. #education #onlinelearning #udemy #skillshareClick To Tweet
I was so nervous! I truly had no idea what would come of my efforts. But low and behold, my first course, only about six months in earned a “Highest Rated” badge. My initial self-doubt would have stopped me before ever getting started.
But I went ahead and took the plunge, spent about two weeks creating my course and it grows in popularity and watch-time/student count (and income) every month.
If you’ve wanted to learn how to create art printables, t-shirt designs or eye-catching text designs to sell to customers or clients, you’ll enjoy my courses. They’ll take you from “I have no idea what I’m doing” to “WOW! I totally get this!”
Maybe you enjoy teaching, but aren’t sure what you can do with that outside the school system. I say, consider putting an online course together or start tutoring people online.
Maybe you are passionate about helping others live their best life and want to become a life coach or a wellness coach. You can do this online and build a base of clients and engage with them through video sessions and online assignments.
In fact, a good friend of mine, Sylviane Nuccio, does this and she’s helped a ton of people around the world. The cool thing about this is she also travels the world – working her business remotely with no restrictions on location or client base.
She actually started off blogging and over time, her knowledge base, skill set and passions developed organically into life/relationship/LOA coaching.
This was actually the case for several of the successful people I’ve interviewed for my Study The Solopreneur series. The thing is, you may start your online business doing one thing and wind up going into something different as you continue on your journey. This can be a blessing, a path to self-discovery & a passive income stream doing work you love. #studythesolopreneurClick To Tweet
There are programs that you can take to become a certified life/wellness coach. Just make sure they’re legitimate and accredited.
Get the Wheels in Motion
You want to have an online business – whether it’s a side gig or your full-time career.
You can make money through teaching, creating & selling digital art, photography, coaching, blogging, doing tutorials, making videos, reviewing products – you name it.
Or, maybe you’d prefer to do more administrative work and have a work from home job. If this is the case for you, check out my friend Cori’s blog over at Not Now Mom’s Busy.
In fact, Cori also started her journey focusing on the work from home angle and eventually developed her skills to become a successful web designer, social media manager and she also works with indie authors (another digital content idea) and creates stunning stock images. She’s credited for the beautiful image I used for this post.
But regardless of what you choose to do, just get started!
I’d love to know what you think. Have you wanted to start an online business?
